Biography

I am a broadly trained, versatile biologist with a passion for teaching. I encourage intellectual engagement with information of all kinds, promoting critical thinking, deep and discerning reading, and writing about science and the world at large. I strive to empower my students both in and out of the classroom and to empower myself to be the best instructor that I can be. In true liberal arts tradition, I am interested in wide-ranging topics in biology and in how biology intersects with other disciplines, including education, other sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences. In my personal time, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our cats, gardening and working on our new home, crocheting, hiking, studying Middle Eastern dance, and teaching women’s self-defense.

April 2, 2025

The Black River Audubon Society (local chapter of the National Audubon Society) awarded their annual Hog Island birding camp scholarship to Lab Coordinator/Lecturer in Biology Darla French. Thanks to this sponsorship, Darla will spend an action-packed week in August at Hog Island Audubon Camp in Maine learning from accomplished naturalists, birders, and educators, with an aim to integrate what she’ll learn into department curriculum.
