Biography
Alex Sanchez is an award-winning New York City based choreographer, director, and educator. As an active theater artist Alex brings to Oberlin the unique perspective of working with the greats who shaped the industry, and a keen understanding of the skills required to succeed in today’s Broadway and regional theater.
Recently Alex was nominated for a 2024 Lucille Lortel Award and a 2024 Drama Desk Award for Best Choreography as co-choreographer with Graciela Daniele in Lincoln Center’s production of The Gardens of Anuncia. He also was honored as 2024 SDC Calloway Award Finalist for the same show.
Alex has performed in ten Broadway shows and was in the original cast of Fosse, The Red Shoes, Carousel LTC revival, Big the Musical, Follies Roundabout Theater Revival, Chitty Chitty Bang, and Chita Rivera A Dancers Life. Other Broadway shows include: Love! Valor! Compassion!, Once Upon A Mattress and Wonderful Town. As a musical stager on Broadway his credits include Paradise Square, which won a Tony Award and earned ten nominations.
During the course of his career, he’s collaborated with The MET Opera, Lincoln Center Theatre, The Public Theatre, Playwrights Horizon, and numerous regional theaters including The Goodman Theater, Paper Mill Playhouse, Goodspeed Opera House, Williamstown Theater Festival, and Guthrie Theater.
Additional awards and recognitions include: Chicago’s Joseph Jefferson Award for best choreography (2022); co-recipient of the SDC Joe A. Calloway Award for Best Choreography (2015); and two-time winner of the Broadway World Award Best Choreography (2011 and 2012). Alex has been nominated for an Outer Critic Circle Award, Lucille Lortel Award, Connecticut Critic Circle Award, nine Joseph Jefferson Awards, and was a 2022 SDC Breakout Award Finalist.
Prior to his Broadway career Alex was a soloist ballet dancer with Ballet Chicago for four seasons, ballet guest artist for The Ruth Page Ballet, The Festival Ballet, Southern Ballet Theater, Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Company, and The Chicago Rep Dance Ensemble.
As an educator, Alex currently teaches at Steps on Broadway, Broadway Dance Center, and
The Peridance Center. Additionally, he was Theatre Department Chair of Oakland School for the Arts.
