Abigail Warchol

Biography

Abigail Warchol is a historian of modern Africa whose research focuses on constructions of care, social welfare, and colonialism in francophone West Africa. Her current research project, "Colonial Care: Children, Charity, and the Political Project in Senegal, 1920–1960," examines the ways that colonial governments, religious organizations, and African communities claimed and negotiated their responsibility to care for children in Senegal. Her work has appeared in the Journal of Colonialism and Colonial History and French Historical Studies.

At Oberlin, Professor Warchol teaches courses on African history, French empire,  gender and sexuality in European empires, and the history of humanitarianism.
