In 2003, composer Andrew Norman was researching the art of Italian futurist Giacomo Balla for a term paper, watching his roommates play a car racing video game called Gran Turismo, and thinking about the legacy of Baroque string virtuosity as a point of departure for his next project. The intersection of these three otherwise unrelated activities resulted in his piece Gran Turismo, a composition for violin octet.
Under the direction of Timothy Weiss, members of the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble perform Gran Turismo in the newest upload to the Oberlin College YouTube channel.
