In 2003, composer Andrew Norman was researching the art of Italian futurist Giacomo Balla for a term paper, watching his roommates play a car racing video game called Gran Turismo, and thinking about the legacy of Baroque string virtuosity as a point of departure for his next project. The intersection of these three otherwise unrelated activities resulted in his piece Gran Turismo, a composition for violin octet.

Under the direction of Timothy Weiss, members of the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble perform Gran Turismo in the newest upload to the Oberlin College YouTube channel.

Oberlin’s most anticipated fashion show begins as cheers swell when models, draped in creative attire, take their turn down the walk. This is a signature event during Black History Month. It also serves as inspiration for this week’s photo series.
