Office for Institutional Equity
Student Education through PRSM
Oberlin students play a large part in Oberlin's sexual harm prevention education program.
Every school in the United States is required to train their students about Title IX. While most colleges check that box through online training, Oberlin requires our students to attend two in-person, peer-led workshops within their first year on campus. The goal of the workshops is to give students the skills they'll use to create a safer campus, and the base knowledge they'll need to continue learning through more advanced training offered by many offices and student organizations throughout a student's years at Oberlin.
PRSM—Preventing and Responding to Sexual Misconduct—is a student organization whose members are employed by the Office for Institutional Equity to conduct the college's consent education and awareness efforts on campus. Workshop trainers receive administrative support, workshop content guidance, education, resources, and advising from the equity, diversity, and inclusion staff. PRSM's first year workshops—Consent Essentials and Bystander Intervention—include:
-
A statement that the institution prohibits sexual and or gender-based harassment, discrimination and violence, including sexual violence, stalking, and intimate partner violence
-
The definition of prohibited conduct under college policy, state, and federal law
-
The definition of consent
-
A description of safe and positive options for bystander intervention
-
Information on risk reduction
-
Information on how to recognize warning signs of abusive behavior
-
Options and resources for reporting sexual violence or discrimination/harassment
