Freefilmers, Ukraine: Screening and Conversation

Date, time, location

Date
Wednesday, April 17, 2024
Time
12:30 pm to 2:00 pm EDT

Join us on Zoom for a screening of the film My Favorite Job and a conversation with the filmmaker and activist Sashko Protyah, co-founder of the Freefilmers cinemovement and NGO from Mariupol, Ukraine. Freefilmers make films about human life and the struggle for equality and freedom. They promote independent filmmaking and grassroots initiatives in political arts. My Favorite Job is a short film documenting the work of volunteer drivers who helped to evacuate civilians from Mariupol in spring 2022. Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Freefilmers have been actively involved in all kinds of essential work, such as the transportation of humanitarian aid, medical supplies, and equipment to the regions most affected by the war; taking refugees back to safer places; and keeping visual war diaries that feature overlooked stories and silenced narratives. Sashko Protyah will be joined by Victoria Donovan, Professor of Ukrainian and East European Studies, St Andrews University, Scotland, for a conversation about self-organization and solidarity. All are welcome!

Content warning: the film contains some violence and scenes of war, described verbally and through animation.
