Enhancing Your Online Security: Introducing eduroam and ObieConnect
October 4, 2023 11:30 AM
We are excited to announce significant improvements to our wireless network infrastructure. Here’s what you need to know:
Why the Change?
We have deployed two new secure networks, eduroam and ObieConnect, to enhance your online experience and ensure the security of your data.
Introducing eduroam
Eduroam is a highly secure, authenticated, and encrypted wireless network. It safeguards the communication of your portable devices, such as laptops and smartphones. The best part? You can also use eduroam when visiting other participating institutions. For more details, visit eduroam’s official website.
Connect to eduroam
- Select “eduroam” from the network list.
- Log in with your email (e.g., jsmith@oberlin.edu) and Oberlin password.
- Proceed to follow the provided instructions.

Connect to ObieConnect
ObieConnect is designed to support stationary consumer devices like smart speakers, TVs, and video game systems, which may not be compatible with eduroam. You can obtain a unique password for ObieConnect, allowing you to connect up to 20 devices securely.
When Can You Make the Switch?
Both of these new secure networks are already available for use. ObieWifi will continue to coexist with eduroam and ObieConnect until June 2024, ensuring a smooth transition for users who have previously configured devices for ObieWifi. If your online activity requires a secure network connection, you should immediately make the migration to eduroam. We will periodically send reminders throughout the semester to assist you with this transition.
In the coming spring, you will receive reminders to join one of the secure networks every time you connect to ObieWifi.
In June 2024, ObieWifi will be retired and replaced with ObieGuest, a network designed exclusively for visitors.
What’s Your Role?
Starting in the fall of 2023, we kindly request that you migrate your devices to one of these new secure networks. Here’s a simple guide:
- For portable devices like laptops and smartphones, connect to eduroam.
- For stationary devices such as smart speakers, TVs, or game systems, use ObieConnect.
Thank you for your cooperation in this important upgrade to our network infrastructure. We are committed to providing you with a secure and reliable online experience at Oberlin College.
