“Learn Not to Burn” Training hosted in Wilder Bowl

Campus Safety

On October 12, the Division of Student Affairs, Office of Student Safety & Wellbeing, and the Department of Campus Safety hosted the Oberlin Fire Department in a Fire Extinguisher safety training in Wilder Bowl.

For many Oberlin students, this is likely the first time they have been on their own and responsible for many aspects of their daily living, including their safety.  The Ohio State Fire Marshal reports that there have been 175 campus-related fire fatalities since January of 2000.   The Fire marshal also reports missing or disabled smoke alarms and careless disposal of smoking materials are common factors in these fires.

City of Oberlin Fire Chief Robert Hanmer and his team of fire professionals were on hand to demonstrate the use of fire extinguishers using a gas-powered, fire-producing simulator.  Firefighters would ignite the simulator and guide the students in a hands-on demonstration of the use of the extinguisher.  Each demonstration ended with the student safely and successfully extinguishing the fire.

Firefighters also provided important fire safety tips, including these for operating fire extinguishers:

When operating a fire extinguisher, remember the word PASS:

∙         Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism.

∙         Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.

∙         Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.

∙         Sweep the nozzle from side to side.

Only operate an extinguisher if safe to do so. If in doubt, get out and ensure you know your residence hall’s Fire Safety Plan.
