Ok, I've been a REALLY bad boy. I haven't posted any blogs since we moved to our new website many months ago. I've actually written a few, but because I'm somewhat of a Luddite they still reside on my laptop or in the old Oberlin blog site. I'll try to dig out a few of the old thoughts soon and put them up for your perusal. Well, on to today's blog.
In case you didn't know, today is decision day! This is the day when the 83 international students that we admitted are supposed to have postmarked their decision as to whether or not to attend Oberlin College. Many students have already sent in their deposits and reply cards. Others have e-mailed to say that they are coming, but the actual deposits haven't arrived yet. Some folks have mailed their replies in, but haven't sent us e-mails to let us know ahead of the letter arrival. And I'm sure that there are even a few folks out there who haven't yet made up their mind (you know who you are!).
Here are some preliminary details about the Arts & Sciences (A&S) kids who have told us they are coming.
So far 31 foreign A&S students have confirmed. This represents the most in Oberlin College history!! Nineteen countries are represented (tying last year's record). Countries with multiple students represented are China (9), S. Korea (4), and Nigeria, Pakistan, Japan, and Canada (2 each). We have our first ever student coming from Bahrain! Other countries represented are Australia, Brazil, Ecuador, India, Kenya, Myanmar, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Turkey. In case you haven't solved the addition problem yourself, one of the matriculating students is a dual citizen so counts as being from two countries.
The decisions of 31 of our admitted students have not yet reached us and I'm guardedly optimistic that at least a few of those great applicants will be joining us as well.
To those of you who reside on the wait list, I'm sorry to have to say it but you are going to have to remain patient a while longer. At the very least we need to learn what the results are of the 31 decisions that are still pending and that will take at least another week.
I'll try to post some more interesting stuff on Monday. Old posts, if nothing else.

Wait, so 31 have confirmed and you're waiting on 31 admitted-not-yet-confirmed?

It was 31 of each when I wrote yesterday, but we sent out an e-mail asking people to please notify us by e-mail of their decisions and have received about a dozen more students indicating that they are not planning to attend. We don't really expect many more to accept, but I'm hoping for one or two more anyway; usually people who are planning to attend let us know before those who decline.

Have any more international students enrolled?

Actually rather than gain any we lost one! :(
One student who was planning to enroll in our double degree program decided to attend another Conservatory instead and canceled her enrollment. But the good news is that the Conservatory of Music did even better than we did and between the College and the Con we have 68 new international students from 25 countries enrolling at Oberlin this fall. This is the most in Oberlin history by a LOT.
