What to Expect in Fall 2021: COVID Policies

Dear Obies, 

We have just said goodbye to our first ever summer semester cohort and are busily preparing to fully welcome all of our students, faculty, and staff to an academic year with the pandemic affecting nearly every aspect of campus life.

But there is a big difference between last year and our current situation. This year we have access to vaccinations that allow us to pursue a fulfilling and safe, on-campus experience.

I recently sat down with Campus Health Coordinator Katie Gravens to discuss COVID-19 ObieSafe protocols and how all of us can pursue a rich and true Oberlin experience this semester. This is at once an exciting and yet delicate prospect. So in the coming weeks, we will offer a number of webinars for students, parents, faculty, and staff to hear more about Oberlin’s policies, to ask questions, and to learn how we intend to move forward together.

A key point to remember is that Oberlin’s ObieSafe protocols reflect data trends and the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control, and state and local public health experts. Protocols and policies are subject to change based on evolving information. A second underlying guideline for us all: Oberlin will have a low level of risk of serious illness due to its high vaccination rate. Those who are unvaccinated are at the most risk. Those who are vaccinated rarely become seriously ill. We will continue to use common sense mitigation strategies for the safety of all.

We were successful in what we set out to do last year, which was to keep our campus safe. I know that we can do this again.
