The guidance provided here is public health information and not medical advice.

You need the COVID vaccine and booster—even if you have already had COVID. The CDC recommends that everyone be vaccinated, regardless of whether or not you have previously been infected with COVID-19 for various reasons. These reasons include the following:

  • Research conducted has proven boosters significantly reduce risk of severe illness and hospitalization.

  • Booster doses are now recommended for everyone 12 and older. You should receive a booster more than 5 months after your primary series if you received Moderna; more than 5 months after your primary series if you received Pfizer; and more than 2 months after your primary series if you received Johnson & Johnson.

  • Omicron reinfects individuals who have already had COVID. Being fully vaccinated provides additional protection against reinfection.

  • Initial COVID-19 vaccine series along with appropriately timed boosters provide a stronger and more consistent immune response than natural infection.

  • It is nearly impossible to predict whether you are at risk for reinfection if you have had COVID in the past.

  • Being vaccinated and boosted appropriately provides the best possible protection against variant strains of COVID19.

It is unknown what variants we may face in the future. Getting your booster is the first and vital step in being protected. Learn about more booster information from the CDC.
