“Seeking Balance through Renewable Energy”
Are there multiple ways to find balance with wind turbines? Over the past 2+ decades
the wind industry has added active rotor balancing feedback into newer designs to
mitigate mechanical loading, reduce the amount of material needed in the structure, and
reduce the cost of clean energy. The cost & material reduction in turn improves our
ability to bring energy systems into better balance with the natural environment. One of
the best parts of my work in wind has been the opportunity to play a part in some of
these developments. I’ll walk you through technical aspects of wind turbines including
rotor balancing, touch upon other renewable technologies and my own journey, and
suggest some ways technically inclined students can get involved in the energy
transition.
