Biography
Nicholas Jones taught at Oberlin for forty years, and served as Chair of the Department of English and Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. His teaching focusing on the close reading of literary texts in English through interdisciplinary engagement with dramatic performance, film studies, women's studies, translation studies, music, and the visual arts. Nick co-led four semesters wth the Oberlin-in-London Program.
As Associate Dean, Nick pioneered developments in interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship, working to strengthen ties among the College of Arts and Sciences, the Conservatory, and the Allen Memorial Art Museum, and helped to create the museum's position of Curator of Academic Programs.
In retirement in Berkeley, California, Nick has published two book-length translations from Italian—one of the madrigal poems of Giovanni Battista Guarini, and the other a prizewinning translation of Jacopo Sannazaro's Arcadia. Since leaving Oberlin, Nick has taught many lifelong learning courses.
Nick has published many reviews of concerts and operas in ClevelandClassical.com, San Francisco Classical Voice, and the San Francisco Chronicle. He sings in several Bay Area choirs and enjoys playing chamber music. He is a member of the board of the San Francisco Early Music Society and a former board member of Early Music America.
