Biography

Esteban Cabeza de Baca is a painter and sculptor whose work addresses post-colonial narratives and pre-Columbian ecological forms of knowledge in ways that confound Cartesian single-point perspective. Cabeza de Baca is head of the Painting Department at Oberlin College teaching observational painting of landscape, figurative painting, abstraction as well as contemporary art theory and professional practice seminars. 

He received a BFA from The Cooper Union in 2010 and an MFA from Columbia University in 2014 and studied at the Rijksakademie in the Netherlands in 2018. Cabeza de Baca has had solo exhibitions at Garth Greenan Gallery, Parker Gallery, San Luis Obispo Museum of Art, The Momentary and Kunstfort Vijfhuizen. He has exhibited at the Hammer Museum, Albright Knox Art Museum, MoMA PS1, Museo Del Barrio, MCA San Diego and MCA Denver. Cabeza de Baca has received numerous grants and awards including Stern Fellowship, Stokroos Foundation Grant, a Henk en Victoria de Heus Fellowship and NYFA Painting Fellowship. He has attended residencies such as Civitella Ranieri, Anderson Ranch, LMCC Workspace Program and Sharpe Walentas Studio Program. Cabeza de Baca’s work is in the permanent collections of Espacio 23, Harvard University, North Dakota Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Parrish Art Museum, Phoenix Art Museum and The Bunker Artspace, Williams College Museum of Art. 

Prior to arriving to Oberlin, Cabeza de Baca taught at Columbia University, Yale University in the Graduate Painting department, Hunter College Graduate Visual Arts program, UT Knoxville and SUNY Purchase College. He is represented by Garth Greenan Gallery and Parker Gallery.
