Biography

Christine Varga is a higher education professional with more than 30 years of experience in campus recreation, coaching, and student development. Her expertise includes outdoor leadership, experiential education, and creating inclusive programs that foster student engagement, leadership, and community.

Christine joined Oberlin College in April 2026, where she oversees outdoor recreation, intramural sports, group fitness, aquatics, the climbing wall, and club sports. She is passionate about developing engaging recreational experiences that bring students together, encourage healthy lifestyles, and cultivate leadership through teamwork, adventure, and experiential learning. Her work emphasizes collaboration, risk management, and providing students with opportunities to build confidence, resilience, and lifelong leadership skills while having fun and forming meaningful connections with others.

Beyond her role at Oberlin, Christine enjoys teaching outdoor recreation, with a focus on archery, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. An avid rock climber, she believes deeply in the transformative impact outdoor adventure has on students and the transferable skills gained through these experiences. Her passion for nature and outdoor recreation reflects her commitment to promoting both mental and physical well-being while helping participants develop technical skills and embrace safe, enjoyable recreation centered on lifetime leisure activities.

Christine earned her bachelor's degree from Baldwin Wallace University, majoring in Sports Medicine with minors in Fitness Management and Coaching. As a student, she was actively involved in campus leadership and athletics, serving as Sophomore Class Vice President, holding leadership positions within Fraternity and Sorority Life, working as an athletic trainer, and competing as a four-year varsity swimmer and diver. These experiences helped shape her lifelong commitment to movement, leadership, teamwork, and service.

Throughout her career, Christine has remained dedicated to mentorship, experiential learning, outdoor recreation, and student success. She has also contributed extensively to the sport of rugby through volunteer leadership, serving in operations at National Collegiate Rugby championships and as the Allegheny Rugby Union Women's Collegiate Commissioner. Her combination of educational leadership, instructional expertise, and commitment to personal development has made her a valued leader in higher education, collegiate recreation, and the broader community.
