students, staff and alumni planted native plants at the George Jones Memorial Farm and Eastwood Elementary School in Oberlin.
Our mission, in partnership with the surrounding community, is to encourage all students to become engaged citizens through curricular and co-curricular initiatives, which enrich the community and enhance students' education.
Our vision is that Oberlin College students, members of the faculty and staff, and the greater Oberlin community understand the importance and benefits of a civically engaged community. A civically engaged community is one that recognizes and respects the cultures of others and acknowledges community service as a bold and innovative approach to learning.
The Bonner CSL's programs prepare all students for both engaged citizenship and effective civic leadership. The Bonner CSL supports a growing number of faculty-initiated community-based learning experiences that educate students and strengthen the community. Through the development of increasingly strong collaborations with the Bonner CSL, community partner programs are consistently enhanced.

Announcements:
A message from the Community Service Resource Center (CSRC)
The school year is over but there are still many opportunities to engage with the community in North East Ohio:
1. Needed: Facilitators/Camp Counselor for Emerging Leaders Institute serving incoming 9th grade African American boys identified as at-risk of not graduating. Educational stipends available
Looking for experienced, mature, and reflective leaders ready to serve as facilitators and camp counselors for a 6 week summer, early college program. The program serves a select group incoming 9th grade African American boys from the Elyria Public Schools identified as at-risk of not graduating. It will run three days per week, June 23 through August 1, 2008. Camp counselors need to be available for a three day training, preferable June 25-27, but this is flexible depending on the selected counselor's schedules.
This civically-engaged leadership program was informed by a previous highly successful pilot program. Through reflective activities, fieldtrips, skill trainings and mentorship opportunities students will begin to identify, and experience the results of engaging with, both personal and community resources. Participants will play a major role in the layout of their experience during the first week. This approach willcontinue throughout the institute, including designing, securing funding for and implementing a one-day service project. PRIORITY will be given to those applicants with a strong commitment to providing on-going support for these young students as they continue through high school!
Camp counselors will also have the opportunity to shape the program's curriculum by engaging participants in the Oberlin College campus. This could include informal discussions/activities with AfricanAmerican male professors and/or admissions personnel. Other ideas are to break students into small groups based on interest and expose them to
non-academic college experiences – i.e. the photography lab, conservatory music lab and radio station. These are only examples of possibilities.

2. The YWCA of Elyria is in search of a volunteer who would be able to help the Director of Housing Services re-design their current Women's Campus Project brochure. Hours are flexible, experience in lay-out is desired but not required. They are also seeking a volunteer who is willing to teach a basic computer class at the YWCA to the residents of
the Women's Campus Project (between 12 and 16 persons). Preferably one class per week for an hour and a half, for six to eight weeks in a row. This class would teach the basics of turning on the computer, navigating the Internet, how to set up a free email account, and familiarity with Microsoft Word. The classes would not be formal; but instead an informal open class time.
