The Conservatory Announces New Faculty for Fall 2008

Dean of the Conservatory David H. Stull has announced that three new faculty members will join the Conservatory in the fall of 2008 in the voice, organ, and composition departments. Bass-baritone Julien Robbins will be Associate Professor of Voice; organist Jack Mitchener joins the faculty as Associate Professor of Organ; and composer Josh Levine will be Assistant Professor of Composition.

Construction Begins on Phyllis Litoff Building, Oberlin's New Home For Jazz Studies

On August 8, 2008, construction on the environmentally innovative Phyllis Litoff Building began in earnest . The project is expected to take 14 months to complete. Plans are for the building to open during fall semester 2009, and arrangements are being made for a gala dedication ceremony and grand opening. Besides housing Oberlin’s renowned Jazz Studies Department and a world-class recording studio, the Litoff Building will also provide a vibrant archive for the largest privately held jazz recording collection in America.

Following Bach's Footsteps, Organist Bálint Karosi AD ’05, MM ’07 Wins International Competition

Karosi won first prize in the XVIth International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition held in Leipzig, Germany, the city where Bach, himself an expert organist, composed and performed for the final two decades of his life. Founded in 1950 by the Bach-Archiv, the competition is among the most prestigious in the world. Karosi, 29, is the first American-based organist ever to win first prize, and with it a 10,000 Euro award and the coveted title of “Bachpreistäger” (“Bach Prizeholder”).

Baroque Violinist Johanna Novom ’07 Wins American Bach Soloists' Competition

Violinist Johanna Novom ’07 was named first-prize winner at this year’s International Young Artists Competition, sponsored by the American Bach Soloists (ABS) and held on June 8, 2008, in Berkeley, California. With her victory, the Cleveland Heights-based baroque violinist received a $2,500 prize and the opportunity to return to perform a featured concerto with the ensemble during its 2009-10 season. She also joined the steadily expanding rank of Obies who have emerged victorious in the ABS competition.

Artist Recital Series Offers 130th Season of Concerts at Finney Chapel

Season subscriptions are now available for 2008-09 concerts. From October through April, the Artist Recital Series will bring virtuoso soloists, renowned chamber ensembles, and world-class orchestras to perform in Finney Chapel. The series begins its 130th season on October 5th with a performance by the Cleveland Orchestra and pianist Emanuel Ax, conducted by Music Director Franz Welser-Möst.

Joseph Ripka Wins First Prize at the Dublin International Organ Competition

Organist Joseph (Joey) Ripka ’09 has won first prize at the Dublin International Organ Competition, held on June 28, 2008, at Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland. In addition to 5,000 euros, his award includes recital engagements in Ireland, the U.K., and continental Europe.

Raising the Roof Even Higher

The building fund for the Phyllis Litoff Building, "the roof that jazz is raising," has been enhanced by two $4 million gifts. Oberlin College President Marvin Krislov announced in early November that of three separate, $4 million gifts that were pledged to the College, two of them — $8 million — are earmarked for construction of Oberlin’s new home for jazz studies.
