Yeomen soccer still seeking first win

Heads up!: Second-year midfielder Jonathan Hunter vies with an adversary to gain control of the ball.

The Oberlin Yeomen soccer team opened their season up Sept. 3 with a home game against Babson College. The Yeomen started the game somewhat lethargic, and Babson capitalized, scoring a goal at the 21:03 mark of the first half.

Oberlin trailed most of the game by this 1-0 margin, but with 2:47 left in the game, first-year Kyle Taljan scored the game-tying goal. With the score evened at 1-1, the Yeomen managed nine shots on goal the remainder of the game. Unfortunately, none of them ended up connecting, as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Oberlin’s second game of the season came one day later against Defiance College. Oberlin jumped out to a 1-0 lead with the help of a penalty kick by third-year David Wilson at the 17:54 mark of the first half. Defiance evened the score with a goal at 14:19 of the second half. Then, with 1:31 left to play, Defiance player Karl Eustache delivered the fatal blow to the Yeomen, putting Defiance up for good at 2-1.

The Yeomen’s next game came this past Wednesday versus Capital University. Capital jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two goals in the first 7:21 of the game. The Yeomen spent the rest of the game playing catch up, but fell short as Wilson once again had the lone goal for the team, which ended 2-1.

Head Coach Blake New said, “We kind of fell asleep in the first 15 minutes.” Oberlin’s record now stands at 0-2-1. The Yeomen travel to Manchester College this Saturday for their next game.
