In the Locker Room: Elvis Francois

Elvis Lionel Francois or “El”
Sport: Yeoman Basketball #33
Listed Height: 5’10 (in truth, he is only 5’8)
Hometown/H.S.: Columbus, Ohio/Olympia (Fla.)

Matt Kaplan: Where do you stand in the hierarchy of playing order for the Yeomen’s squad?
Elvis: Sixth man. No doubt.

MK: What qualities must the sixth man embody?
Elvis: Energy. Spark plug. Hustle. Heart.

MK: El, baby, I am not much of a numbers guy. But I found out you average 2.7 minutes per game, 0.5 points per game, and you have a 33 field goal percentage, three offensive boards, one personal foul and five points in the year.
Elvis: Yo, for real, I do the intangibles. The diving on the floor, the hustling, the cheering and all the stuff that never shows up in the statistics. I also prepare the starters by pushing them in practice.

MK: The season is shaping up. Tell me the low-down as to what happened to the Yeomen this year. Where do we stand for the future?
Elvis: We were in a lot of games. If we had won a few of the last five, then we would have made the tournament. We were also plagued by injuries. Noah [Goldman] getting mono; D.J. [Maynard] was hurt; Joe [Blasher] hurt his ankle early on. But we got a great returning group and great coaching. We will be nice next year.

MK: You’ve got a lot of geographic diversity on the team. Kids from Vegas, a kid from Cali, Ohio, Chicago and Florida. Does the pre-game music reflect similar diversity? What are you jamming to on your iPod?
Elvis: T.I. and Lupe Fiasco.

MK: What is the craziest music you heard one of your teammates listening to before a game?

Elvis: (laughs) D.J. I heard him listening to the Mambo.

MK: You got the alumni game coming up this weekend. Anyone you excited to see?

Elvis: Recent grad Dewayne Evans. Check out his highlight tape on YouTube. He is crossing people over and is pretty much real nice. Also, come check it out, because I may be singing “The National Anthem.”

MK: How did singing “The National Anthem” last year go?

Elvis: Why you got to go there? There are a lot of words to remember in the song! (laughs)

MK: Until next time…peace out!
