"That's just stupid fast."
Breaking six varsity records, four of which were her own, first-year Celeste Mercer lapped her way to qualifying for the Division III nationals in the 100-backstroke at the Miami of Ohio invitational swim meet last week. Mercer swam the 100-backstroke in 58.29, beating the A-cut by 1.3 seconds and beating her old varsity record of 1:01.49. She also broke the records in the 50 yard free-style, the 100 yard free-style, the 200 yardback-stroke, and participated in record breaking times in the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 medley. |

Rumor tells me that Oberlin has its own bowling team. Is this true?
What is your average score?
How often during the year does the team compete?
How many times a week do you wax your balls?
Other than bowling, what are your current hobbies?
Do you think that President Clinton should be impeached?
With the same women?
As a bowler, has any single athlete influenced your style of play?
Who is going to win the Super Bowl this year?
What would a perfect date entail?
What is your favorite bowling pin?
But you don't need to win free games. You work at the bowling alley. So your last answer was nothing more than a shameless advertisement, wasn't it?

IN THE LOCKERROOM WITH...Jonathan Stoper
Junior Jonathan Stoper is the captain of the world-famous Oberlin bowling team.
Yes, we have a bowling team. I have been its captain for three years. During that time, we actually beat a team in one game, but we usually play for fun. Winning is not important.
Right now, I average 175 points per game. My high game is 272 out of a possible 300.
We play in two tournaments each year. One is held at Kent State University, and the other is the ACUI tournament, which is usually held at Bowling Green or the University of Michigan.
I have never waxed my balls, but I do like to put them in the buffing machine now and then.
Tennis, table tennis, judo, juggling, golf, and NFL Blitz for the Sony Playstation. Basically, I want to be able to play any sport decently. I also enjoy a night of heavy drinking.
If I were in his position, I would have done the same damn thing.
Possibly.
I've always like the way Walter Ray Williams, Jr. throws the ball on the inside line straight into the pocket.
The San Francisco 49ers. Steve Young is the best quarterback in the history of the NFL, with the possible exception of Joe Montana. He can run and pass. He does it all.
A romantic evening of bowling, a movie about bowling - say, Kingpin or The Big Lewbowski - and a candlepin-lit dinner. And afterwards, lots of hot sex.
I like the red pins over at Hales Gymnasium. When you knock them down with a strike or a spare, you win a free game.
Yes, it was.
