Baseball drops a good one to Wooster

The baseball team travelled to the College of Wooster on Wednesday for some of their toughest competition of the season, and lost the doubleheader 11-2, 13-2, in spite of some of their strongest play of the season.

Wooster is ranked ninth in the nation, has a record of 23-3 with one tie. The yeomen at their best would probably not be able to beat the team of 30-plus gorilla-men. "We were beaten soundly by a good team," Coach Todd Mooney said. "We didn't give the games away. They're an outstanding hitting team and they hit the ball well against us."

Mooney has mixed feelings about his team's playing, but definitely doesn't think they played terriblely. "With a team that good you have to go in and almost play a perfect game," he said. "We put some scare into them. We had many chances to score runs that we didn't capitalize on."

In the first game the Yeomen led after the first inning 1-0. But in the second inning "Wooster scored two and we turned around, loaded the bases with one run, and couldn't get anyone across the plate," Mooney said. "When you're playing a team of the caliber of Wooster and you do that, you can't expect to win."

Solid individual performances came from junior Nate Walsh who went 2-4 and sophomore Mike Fradin, who was 3-4.

"We had pretty respectable defense in the field," Mooney said.

The baseball team has two upcoming home games. They play Kenyon College on Saturday and Allegheny College on Tuesday.
