Women Tennis travels all over to win and lose games

by Jeff Glickman

Over Spring Break, the Yeowomen went on a spring break odyssey to Atlanta and Florida, where they played three matches, went to Disneyworld, and hung out with all the other spring-breakers at Daytona Beach. They also had two games before break, and two games this past week.

On Mar. 8 and 9, two 9-0 shutouts came at the expense of Otterbein College and Youngstown State University. Thursday, the Yeowomen won their first conference match against Case Western Reserve University, 5-4. The Yeowomen's record now stands at 6-3, 1-0 in conference.

Against Otterbein and Youngstown State only two matches in both wins were close. The Yeowomen lost just two of the 74 games (points) played in singles with Youngstown State, and just seven games in the whole match.

"We completely slaughtered them," sophomore Tara Sievers said.

During their trip to the Southeast the team lost to both Emory University and Division I Stephen F. Austin University, but crushed Agnes Scott College 9-0 on March 16, their first day of play during spring break. Three Yeowomen won three set matches: sophomore Leigh Ann Totty (4-6, 6-4, 7-5), sophomore Tara Sievers (2-6, 6-3, 6-4), and junior Kate Petersen (7-6, 7-1, 1-6, 6-2).

The next day, the Yeowomen got skunked 9-0 by Emory, the defending Division III National Champions. Co-captain senior Bethany Pribila, the number one singles player, had the only close match (in score), as she fell 7-5, 6-3.

"The matches were much closer than the scores," Hunsinger said. "In singles, we did better than we did a year ago."

Up next for Oberlin was Stephen F. Austin on March 19. The Yeowomen were tired after traveling from Atlanta to Florida and lost 5-2 to scholarship players. Pribila, the number one singles player, won her match in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. First-year Jill Brockelman also won her match 6-3, 6-4.

Friday, March 21 the Yeowomen were supposed to play against Springfield University, which would have been a good match according to Hunsinger, but instead scrimmaged against Division II Cleveland State University.

On Tuesday the team plays conference champion Kenyon College. Next weekend, April 4-5, the team competes in the Great Lakes College Association tennis tournament.
