Baseball team feels frustrated

Team has lost nine games in about one week

by Dave Bechhoefer

The baseball team is off to a frustrating start this season as they have accumulated a record of 0-9 in the space of about a week. On Tuesday they played a double-header against Penn-State Behrend, losing 4-2 and 8-2.

The majority of the team's games were played on a whirlwind tour of Florida over spring break. The games were mostly pretty close, but Oberlin wasn't able to pull out any wins. "We showed we can play with many teams," sophomore Jaso Quinn said. "We just need to figure out a way to win."

Sophomore Carson Keible pitched a good first game against Penn State, giving up only four runs, none earned. "He pitched an incredible game," senior Kwang Kim said. "We should have given him more support." Oberlin ended the game with a double-play.

"He was plagued by bad defense," Quinn said. "We had about ten errors."

Inexperience could be a major contributor to the Yeomen's losses, as they have only five or six returning players. "All our first-years contributed greatly," Kim said.

"We have a lot of talent," said Quinn. "We also have a lot of room for improvement."

"We need to go to fundamentals," Kim said. "We need to just catch the ball, throw the ball, and hit the ball."

With such a record one might look to the coaching for a scapegoat. Kim disagrees with any who might have this idea. "The coach's are doing a great job," he said. "It's unfortunate that coaches often take the heat when their team loses, but you can't blame the coach for poor defense."

"It took some people some time to get used to Coach [Todd] Mooney's style," Quinn said, "but the coaching is fine."

The team has another 26 or so games before the end of the season and they should start to come together soon. "We have a better chemistry because of Florida," Quinn said.

The next Yeoman baseball game is a doubleheader at home against Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday.
