Swimming Impresses in Home Opener
Emma Clohessy

Oberlin’s pool is a little more crowded this year, with the addition of 11 new swimmers and one new diver to the team.

Head coach Mark Fino and assistant coaches Jenny Scott and Mary Riley welcome back 16 returning swimmers and one returning diver for the 2007-2008 season.

The men’s team is captained by senior and four-year diver Cory Myers, while the women’s side is led by fellow senior and four-year swimmer Kiri Ulmschneider. With a wealth of experience among the upperclassmen and the competitive new blood of the incoming class, the season looks to be an exciting step forward for the Oberlin swimming and diving program.

Asked about how the incoming class would impact the team, women’s captain Kiri Ulmschneider said: “It is always hard to incorporate a big class into the team, but our freshmen are really going to be an asset to the team, not only in [terms of] times, but also because they are really great people!”

The incoming class certainly proved to be an asset in the team’s home opener against regional rival Baldwin-Wallace last Friday. Inspired by the energy of a packed house, the women won a decisive victory over the visitors with a team score of 192 to Baldwin-Wallace’s 101.

The Yeowomen nearly swept the meet, winning all but one individual event and one relay. Kiri Ulmschneider had an individual win in the 200-yard butterfly. Sophomores Shannon Gallagher and Laura Fries both had two first-place finishes apiece; Gallagher in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle and Fries in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke. First-year Sara Kadi put three wins on the board for Oberlin, sweeping the 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly, and 200-yard individual medley. Her classmate Jenny Meltz finished first in the 1000- and 500-yard freestyle, while fellow first-year Jordan Jancosek took first the 100-yard breast-stroke. The 200-yard medley relay of Fries, Jancosek, Kadi, and Gallagher also placed first. For women’s diving, first-year Christine Martin took both the 1- and 3-meter boards by a comfortable margin over her Baldwin-Wallace competitors.

The men’s team finished with 112 points, not enough to defeat Baldwin-Wallace’s score of 173, but the men did have several impressive individual swims. Junior Scott McInerny raced to first place finishes in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, while first-year Corey Spiro won both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly. First-year Jon Vimr won all three of his events: the 200-yard freestyle, the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard individual medley. Myers dove well to finish second on both boards.

While Myers was impressed with his team’s efforts, he was also appreciative of the crowd that came to the meet. “It was unlike anything I’ve experienced in the past three years to have so many people show. It definitely helped people swim faster.”

On Saturday, Oct. 27, the swimming and diving teams had their first dual meet of the season at Denison. Both the men’s and women’s teams were defeated despite impressive individual performances. For the women’s side, the relay of Jancosek, sophomore Claire Bogart, first-year Jenny Meltz and junior Sarah Cassella were first place finishers in the 200-yard freestyle event. First-years Kelsey Sherman and Sara Kadi each brought home an individual win for Oberlin, in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley, respectively. Additionally, first-year diver Christine Martin recorded a win in the 3-meter event.

The men’s side had two winning relays. Junior Mark Muthersbaugh, first-year Eric Hardy, sophomore Jake Wishart and junior Christian Behrens teamed up to take first in the 200-yard freestyle relay, while senior John Hugens, McInerny, Spiro and Vimr combined to win the 200-yard medley relay. Sophomore Dan Holm had a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, while Myers recorded a win on the diving board in the 3-meter event.

The team opened the season on Saturday, Oct. 20 with a trip to the NCAC Relays meet hosted by nationally ranked Kenyon College. The women finished 7th and the men 9th overall.

The swimming and diving teams compete next Friday and Saturday at the Veale Classic hosted by Case Western. Coming off of the exciting meet against Baldwin-Wallace, Head Coach Mark Fino is upbeat and is excited for the competition. “The Veale Classic meet will be a better test of our competitiveness…it will be an extremely close meet if we swim well.”
