Matthew Holtwick

Alma Mater: Bowling Green State University ‘07
Degree: Sport Management; Emphasis in Sport Marketing
Short Bio: Spring 2007 graduate of Bowling Green State University. Previously worked in the athletic marketing department Bowling Green State University and Cleveland State University.

Matt Kaplan: What the heck is a marketing and promotions/external affairs intern?
Matthew Holtwick:
The position itself was created for me because of the amount of things I was going to be doing during the spring.

MK: What are your general responsibilities for this position?
MH:
For the marketing and promotions part of my title, I am responsible for getting the word out to the community about events or games and then running on-court promotions at men’s and women’s basketball games. For the external affairs part, I make game programs, write stories for www.oberlin.edu/athletic, update the Oberlin athletics website and, at the moment, I am part of the organizing process for the Heisman Golf Outing.

MK: How does one go about marketing college athletics at Oberlin?
MH:
When I got here I was told that this is a school that responds well to flyers, so I have been in contact with Becky in ResEd to get flyers in the dorms and I also have put flyers up at the Library and the Science Center.

MK: What unique issues arise when trying to promote or market athletics at Oberlin?
MH:
Sports isn’t typically high on the priority list of students at a primarily liberal arts college like Oberlin, so we had to make the sporting events more marketable so that they could appeal to students with such a wide span of interests and abilities.

MK: What programs have you instituted to increase visibility of the department?
MH:
I have made a big push in the Spirit Card Program during the men’s and women’s basketball seasons. I created half-time promotions where the winner would receive one of the prizes that students earn by participating in the Spirit Card Program. Many times I also passed out Spirit Cards to students in attendance at the games and most accepted them and came back to get them punched at another game.

MK: Do you find the student body and the community receptive to attending games and rallying behind the teams?
MH:
Getting high attendance at games is a challenge, but once students and community members are there, they do a great job of cheering on the teams, win or lose. Students also have enjoyed taking part in the various promotions and games held during halftime at basketball games. Next year will be a very exciting time for Oberlin athletics. Each team has gotten better each year and I’m confident that the attendance will grow with them.
