The Oberlin College baseball team had a .500 finish to its season as it went 3-3 over the last week of the season to bring its record to 15-23 and 6-10 in the North Coast Athletic Conference with two games to play.

Oberlin started its tear with a home doubleheader against Hiram College. First-year Jack Dunn started the first game of the twinbill and became locked in a pitchers’ duel.

Dunn had a rough start to the game as he gave up two runs in the first inning, but he escaped further damage by striking out Hiram’s Kyle Kovach with the bases loaded. He was stellar after the first, as he only allowed one base runner into scoring position the rest of the game. Oberlin, however, was unable to muster much offense in the game.

The Yeomen’s lone run came in the second, and their only other threat came in the sixth when they loaded the bases with one out, only to hit into a double play.

After falling 1-2 in the opener, Oberlin bounced back with a spectacular comeback in the nightcap to split with Hiram.

Down four with one out and no one on in the last inning, Oberlin put all the pressure on Hiram. A hit and three walks brought in a run and left the bases loaded for senior Rick Betzel.

Betzel ripped a double to unload the bases and tie the game. Then, with two outs, Oberlin scored a run thanks to two Hiram errors to win the game 8-7.

After splitting against Hiram, Oberlin had a much easier time with Myers University, winning both games 10-3 and 7-1.

Oberlin was led on the mound by sophomores Eric Gibbs and PJ Carter, both pitching complete games for the win. Gibbs struck out five while Carter struck out seven.

Oberlin’s offense got to Myers’ starters early in each game, as the Yeomen scored seven runs in the first two innings in each game.

First-year Zach Berman had a monster day offensively with a pair of RBI in each game. Sophomore Jeremy Simon also had a great day at the plate as he scored two runs and had three RBI.

On Wednesday, the Yeomen traveled to Kenyon College to make up a rained-out doubleheader from earlier in the season. Maybe it would’ve been better had the games remained rained out.

Oberlin started its two leaders in wins in Dunn and senior Jaremy Rich but neither could break Kenyon, who scored seven runs in each game. The Yeomen could not manage any offense in the doubleheader as they lost the games 2-7 and 0-7.

Senior Jesse Cullen-Dupont scored the only runs for Oberlin in the games while Betzel recorded the lone RBI.

Even though a playoff berth slipped through the Yeomen’s fingers, they can still reach a season goal.

“We still have goals for this year,” said Rich. “We can set the school record for wins in a season at 17 with two wins this weekend.”

Oberlin can set the record with a home sweep on Cinco de Mayo against Lake Erie College at noon.
