The young women of the Oberlin College lacrosse team faced two tough opponents this week. While fighting tooth and nail for every point, they were able to split the games, going 1-1. After suffering a 6-20 defeat on Thursday last week, the strong and fearless Yeowomen were able to bounce back and rake in a 21-16 victory against the University of Puget Sound.

Facing a tough team from SUNY Fredonia, the Yeowomen could taste another victory on their lips. However, Fredonia showed they would be a tough bunch of bandits to beat when they opened the game with a three to zero run.

First-year Emma “She’s One Smoking Freshwoman” Edmondson put her foot down, and, with a sweet pass from sophomore Dana “Smooth as Whip Cream” Rich, placed the ball in the back of the net for the first home goal. Unfortunately, the Blue Devils were on fire and responded with eight straight goals. Junior Kaitlin “I Take No Guff” Barrer refused to go down silently as she dished it out perfectly to Rich and sophomore Lela “Coconut Fastball” Hull to leave Oberlin trailing 12-3 at half.

Senior Lynn “That Ball Is Mine, ‘Lil Lady” Gerbec led a defensive charge which gave the Yeowomen hope throughout the game. Despite the strong individual performances by Gerbec, Rich and others, the ladies came up short 6-20.

Coming off the frustrating loss to Fredonia State the Yeowomen were looking forward to bouncing back against Washington State based Puget Sound. Hull led Oberlin to a 3-1 lead over the Loggers.

Defense was nowhere to be found in the first half for both teams as each offense battled in a struggle for dominance. With a 5-3 Oberlin advantage, Puget Sound rocketed in four straight goals, stunning the reliable Yeowomen. Barrer put the cherry on top of a three-goal response from the home team, scoring a goal with 15 seconds left in the first half. The game was far from over and no one was walking away with this one.

First-year Scarlett “Hot as Lava” Prati scored seven goals in the second half to crush the spirit of the opponent and guide the Yeowomen to victory. With other stellar performances from Hull, who also scored nine goals, Barrer and  defensive dominance by junior Rose “Southern Belle” Reid, the OC walked off victorious.

The win took the team’s record to 6-3 overall on the year. Coming off winning the last four of their past five games, the team plans to carry the momentum on through the season. Oberlin resumes its conference play against Allegheny at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
