Women's Lacrosse Dominates in Texas

The women’s lacrosse team had a rocky start to the season with a 7-19 loss to a very impressive Notre Dame College on March 20. However, the Yeowomen were not discouraged by this tough loss and kept their heads up as they went into their spring break trip. This year’s squad is young and very optimistic about its potential and the players demonstrated the strong desire for victory as they won all four of their games down in Dallas, Texas.

After massive airplane delays, the Yeowomen arrived in Dallas hungry for their first win. Oberlin did not take long to show its potential, as it handily defeated Fontbonne University 19-2. Lela “Hot Fire” Hull, an incredible sophomore out of Maine, led the team with nine total points. First-year Emma “Eager Beaver” Edmondson racked up a solid five points, showing a little of the flare the first-year class brings to the table.

Sophomore Dana Rich spoke highly of the young players. “Our freshmen are very strong players and they add a lot to the team. We now have many offensive players who can score on a consistent basis, which makes us a much more well-rounded team that will be difficult to defend.”

Oberlin’s next opponent, Linfield College, did not prove to be a worthy opponent either, and the women’s offensive had another field day in a 20-15 win. Hull had another nine-point game but the outcome may have been different without Lela’s teammates. Junior Kaitlin “Eats Glass for Breakfast” Barrer raked in seven points as Edmondson had another head-turning four-point game.

Oberlin continued its tear through cowboy country as it finished the trip with games against Pacific College and the host school, the University of Dallas. Pacific did not stand a chance as Hull and Edmondson repeated their previous respective nine-goal and four-goal games that started spring break. The six points pulled in by Barrer, as well as six by junior Beth Gula, helped the Yeowomen smack down Pacific 18-4.

University of Dallas appeared to be the most challenging opponent for Oberlin but the women were keen on keeping their undefeated trip alive. Although UD put up a decent fight, they were unable to stop first-year Scarlett Prati who had a breakout game, scoring four points. Prati helped lead the Yeowomen to a 13-5 victory, sending the team back home with a 4-1 overall record.

The teamwork has everyone buzzing about the possibilities of this year’s squad. Barrer feels the offensive explosiveness will bring it success. “In Dallas, OC lacrosse established itself as a dangerously offensive team. There were six players that scored in almost every game, which is more than we’ve had as long as I’ve been here,” said Barrer.

The Yeowomen look to carry the spring break momentum with them into conference play. The first test comes this Saturday against Wittenberg University in Oberlin’s home opener.
