In the Locker Room: Samantha and Calvin Kyrkostas

Sam and Calvin Kyrkostas

Hometown: Sea Cliff, N.Y.

This is very special. Sam and Cal are brother and sister, athletic studs, dignified scholars and two courageous and bold escapees from the popped collar, frosted-tipped hair, stickball capital of the world…drum roll please…LOOONG Iiis-land!

Matt Kaplan: Is that how you say it?
Cal: (Laughing) Drink coffee and play swaaaftball out in da yaaard!

MK: So it takes courage to venture off the island and away from the exciting Empire State of New York?
Cal: I climb mountains!

MK: Do you?
Cal: I do. I climbed mountains in Argentina for Winter Term.

MK: Whoa, damn. Can you do this back home?
Sam: No way, unless you want to climb a sand pit.

MK: Sam, what is it like having a sibling on campus? Did you have to hold his hand to ease the transition from the beautiful greens and flowing blue water in Sea Cliff to the well…hmmm…insert adjective here of Oberlin?
Sam: (Laughing) After my intervention…no, he made his presence known and did well.

MK: Such nice words from your sister, Cal. Is she always this nice?
Cal: She is good looking, too! I am going to miss her when she graduates.
MK: How so?
Cal: Her house, her television and her tender loving care!

MK: How else do you distinguish yourselves?
Sam: He is “Lanky” and I am “Tanky.”

MK: I don’t want to make any assumptions here, but how did you come up with “Lanky” and “Tanky?”
Sam: I am built like a tank and Cal is, well…lanky.

MK: You are both athletes. I have noticed this guy, Steve Le, at a lot of baseball and field hockey games. Who is this character?
Cal: He is a great guy.
Sam: An inspiration! Loud and energized.

MK: Do you feel he gives you an advantage that compliments the superior coaching of Deb “The Great” Ranieri?
Sam: Totally! He is great and totally pumps us up. He also keeps opposing fans in check!

MK: Until next week, peace out.
