Yeowomen Volleyball Shutout by Marietta

This past week, the Oberlin Volleyball team had both conference action and non-conference action. The Yeowomen traveled first to Kenyon College for a North Coast Athletic Conference game on Sept. 29 and then to Ohio Wesleyan for a tri-match on Sept. 30 involving Marietta College, Oberlin College and the host Ohio Wesleyan College.

The match at Kenyon began on a positive note for the Yeowomen as they came close to winning the first period, losing by only two points (29-31).

In the second game, the girls looked set to launch a comeback and take the game by storm when they whipped the Kenyon girls 30-17. Unfortunately, this strong play was short lived as the girls ended up losing the game 3-1, going down 23-30 and 16-30 in the third and fourth periods.

The Yeowomen traveled to Ohio Wesleyan to play in the tri-match on Saturday, Sept. 30. The girls played their first game against host Ohio Wesleyan College. Home advantage seemed to spur the Wesleyan girls on as they swept the Yeowomen away, winning three straight games 30-9, 30-18 and 30-17 to earn a 3-0 victory.

Marietta College followed in the trend, beating Oberlin College 3-0 despite the Yeowomen’s strong play in the second period in which they lost by only five points (30-25).

With the three loses this week, the record of the volleyball team drops to 3-13 for the season and 0-8 in the conference play.

Fans of the team are disappointed with this performance. “I know they can do better than they are doing now,” commented fan Benjamin Hillengas. “I expect to see improvement in future performances.”

The Yeowomen look to improve their record on Oct. 8 when they travel to Lake Erie for a tri-match.
