Cross Country Finishes Fourth and Sixth

It is an exciting time to be part of the cross-country program at Oberlin. Both teams were picked in August in the annual preseason poll to compete for the NCAC championships. The women’s team was tied for first with Denison, while the men were picked fifth.

This selection was backed by a solid performance by both teams in the Sixth Annual Bill Sudek Classic at Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, Sept. 2. The Yeowomen finished fourth among fourteen teams, while the Yeomen finished sixth out of twelve teams.

Top runners for the women were sophomores Maddy Davis-Hayes, Flannery Cerbin and junior Marie Barnett, finishing fourth, eighteenth and twenty-second respectively out of 150 runners in the 5K run. Five of the seven Oberlin runners scored were within the top 50 runners.

The men had a strong group of runners with seven finishing in the top 50. Sophomore Everett Schlawin was the top finisher for the men, placing 23 overall out of 160 runners in the 8K run. Senior co-captain Travis Grout also placed well, finishing 35.

The next meet for both teams is on Saturday, Sept. 9 at Earlham College in the GLCA Championship.
