Baseball Stops Slide, Defeats Grove City College

This past week, the Oberlin baseball team played a pair of double headers against Grove City College and Thiel College. Despite the Yeomen snapping their seven-game losing streak, they dropped the next three games.

Senior Steve Solomon started the first game against Grove City on April 27. In his final start at home in his Oberlin career, Solomon went the distance in dominating fashion.

Solomon scattered seven hits throughout the game, but gave up only one run and had six strikeouts. First-year P.J. Carter led the Yeomen offense with two hits, two runs and three RBIs. Solomon and Carter’s contributions helped Oberlin to victory by a score of 7-1.

While game one ended a seven-game losing streak, game two did not produce a similar score. Oberlin could not muster much offense in the second game and lost 4-1.

Sophomore Alex Sugiura started the game and struggled early, giving up three first inning runs. Sugiura settled down, though, and allowed only one more run over the next three innings.

Fellow sophomore Joe Reisz pitched three perfect innings in relief, but Oberlin could not take advantage of Reisz’s pitching. Senior Chad Kutting knocked in fellow senior Nick Broughton for Oberlin’s lone run.

On the final day of April, Oberlin played a double header at Thiel College, dropping both games by four runs each.

In game one, Thiel starter Rich McNeal pitched all seven innings and gave up just one run. Junior Seth Binder was knocked in by fellow junior Jesse Cullen-DuPont for the lone Yeoman run as Oberlin lost 5-1.

Oberlin fell into a large hole early in game two as Thiel scored three runs in the first inning and two more in the second. First-year Cal Kyrkostas hit a two-out, two-run single in the fourth. These runs, however, were the only Yeomen runs in the game as Thiel won 6-2.

The 1-3 week brought Oberlin’s record to 10-26 overall and 2-14 in NCAC play with just two games left to play. Oberlin will travel to Lake Erie College today to play its final two games of the season with hopes to end on a positive note.

Seniors Landon Lerner, Nick Broughton, Joe Sheehan, Chad Kutting and Steve Solomon will be playing their final games for the Yeomen. It will be no easy task as Lake Erie has a better record against common opponents: 2-2 for Lake Erie to 1-5 for Oberlin.

Nonetheless, the Yeomen look to finish strong and send their seniors out with a win.
