It has been an up-and-down week for the Oberlin baseball team. The Yeomen compiled a 2-3 record for the week after a congested schedule that consisted of a double-header on Thursday at Myers University, a double-header at Wittenberg University on Saturday, and a nine-inning home game against Notre Dame College on Wednesday.

The double-header at Myers was the high point for the Yeomen. Oberlin won the first game of the double-header in extra innings and then rolled in the second game, winning by scores of 11-10 and 18-2 respectively.

Game one of the double-header was a thriller that went to extra innings. With two out and runners on the corners in the top half of the seventh, senior Chad Kutting hit a clutch single that tied the game.

In extra innings, first-year Calvin Kyrkostas hit a single with two outs that allowed fellow first-year P.J. Carter to score the go-ahead run. Sophomore Alex Sugiura shut down Myers in the extra inning to get his first save of the season.

Oberlin received tremendous offensive production in game one by junior Jesse Cullen-DuPont, who went 3-4 with four RBI and Kutting who went 2-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Senior Steve Solomon pitched two innings of no-hit ball in relief for the win.

The Yeomen rode the momentum from their extra inning victory, thrashing Myers by double-digits in game two. Sugiura started the game and gave up only one earned run over four innings.

Ten different Yeomen crossed the plate, led by junior Seth Binder and Carter with three apiece. Senior Joe Sheehan and Carter led the way with four RBI each, and four other players had at least two RBI.

Unfortunately, the Yeomen could not carry their winning ways into the weekend double-header at Wittenberg.

Oberlin led Wittenberg 6-4 until the middle of the sixth when everything seemed to fall apart. Wittenberg scored five runs, only two of them earned, in the bottom of the sixth to take a lead that they would not surrender. Oberlin fell by a score of 9-6.

In game two against Wittenberg, Oberlin lost 4-0. Binder’s single leading off the top of the seventh inning was the lone Yeomen hit of the day as Wittenberg pitcher Steve Less shut down the Yeomen with a complete game, striking out nine and allowing just one hit.

Though the trip to Wittenberg was a disheartening experience, Sugiura provided a silver lining as he hit his first career homerun.

Coming into Wednesday, Oberlin was 3-0 against Notre Dame College. Clearly the fourth time was the charm for Notre Dame as they routed Oberlin 10-1. Sheehan provided the lone Yeomen run.

Oberlin’s record now stands at 9-19 overall and 2-10 in NCAC play with 13 games to play. The Yeomen will look to start off the final third of their season on the right foot as they host a pair of double-headers this weekend against Kenyon, at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
