Men’s Tennis Stays Hot, Wins Eighth Straight

The Yeomen tennis team took another win last Saturday in their match against Ohio Dominican University. When they began their match on March 11, the Yeomen started off with a clean sweep of the doubles tournament.

The first match in doubles, consisting of senior David Cotter and junior Jimmy Rosenheim, had a strong start and early lead. Rosenheim said after the match that the pair “got up early and kept them from gaining any momentum.” Their good teamwork and coordination secured the win by a score of 8-4.

The second match, played by sophomores Chris Pray and Colin Burling, also went well, as they won their match 8-6. The third match was won by junior Arthur Zeyda and first-year David Midler, and they kept up the excellent play to win 8-5.

Singles was a different story as the Yeomen began with a string of three tough matches. First was Pray, who had a rough start when his opponent gained an early three-game lead and kept Pray from making a comeback. Pray lost the first set 1-6. In the second set, Pray began to get his swagger back and pushed a close set into a tie-breaker, winning it 11-9.

Pray’s third set was a long and grueling one that kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. With a little patience and some consistently well-placed shots, Pray drove the set into anther tie-breaker where he won 4-2.

The second match was played by Cotter who also had a rough start, faltering in his first set and losing 3-6. Leading into the second set, however, Cotter began to make a comeback. In the end, Cotter was unable to pick up the win, losing his second set 5-7.

Rosenheim played the third match. He played a hard first set but just couldn’t catch up after falling behind and lost 4-6. In the second set the match was a little closer, but Rosenheim still was unable to place enough critical shots where they needed to be, losing the second set 5-7.

Oberlin started improving with Midler’s play during match number four. Midler gave an impressive show as he took an early lead and barely let up long enough for his opponent to breathe. Midler took both sets 6-4 and 6-1.

In the fifth, Zeyda came in strong with some powerful shots, taking his first set with authority 6-1. The second set proved to be more difficult, however, as Zeyda lost 5-7. He was not about to back down, though, as he came back in the third set to win 6-4.

The final match featured sophomore Ezra Goldman as he played the number six spot. The match ended well as Goldman dominated his opponent, winning his first set 6-4 and completely blowing out the second set 6-0. With this, the Yeomen won the match-up by a final score of 5-2. This was their eighth win in what has been an impressive undefeated season thus far.
