Women’s soccer remains optimistic

The Oberlin College women’s soccer team experienced a tough loss to Mount St. Joseph College last week in a 6-1 match Sunday afternoon. Junior Sam Schongalla scored late in the game to prevent the Mount St. Joseph shutout.

Despite the disappointingly steep loss, the Yeowomen left the field confident that they can turn things around in their next few matches.

“We started the season out really strong. Right now we are experiencing a little dip down; however, we know that we have what it takes to turn things around and pull out with a fantastic season,” said junior Kim Buzdygon. “All our retunrners have improved so much and we have a lo of really promising first-years.”

Second-year coach Andy Nelson, who has reportedly been whipping his team into top physical and mental shape, heads the Yeomen soccer team.

The Yeowomen’s next match came on Wednesday against Marietta College. The Lady Pioneers entered the game unbeaten and were scored upon by junior Obies Leah Bellow-Handelman and Mei-Lin Ha. Both Oberlin goals were assisted by Schongalla.

The game ended in a 3-2 win for Marietta College. It was not a disappointing loss for the Yeowomen as they improved their game, played with tremendous heart, and made the Lady Pioneers work hard for their victory.

Oberlin now stands at 1-3-1 on the season and hosts Anderson University on Sunday at 3 p.m.
