Division I competition overwhelms lacrosse
Yeo-laxers offense makes a comeback after half

Just try me: Junior Andrew Crosby (34) looks to shut down Bellarmine’s attack while junior Jared Pickard (21) provides the last line of defense.

The men’s lacrosse team netted its third win of the season on Saturday, defeating Medaille College 14-4. Sophomore Bryan Harfenist and junior Will Jaffee led the attack with their assiduous scoring power. Harfenist scored four goals, two of which came during the crucial first period. Jaffee’s three goals and three assists put the Yeomen soundly out of Medaille’s reach.

Sophomore Ian Dias also scored three goals for the Yeomen. Sophomore Ian Mark, junior David Schlussman, sophomore Jono Sanders and first-year Chris Sanders all scored as well. Sophomore Matt Markman and Mark lead the team in ground-ball pickups, combining for 15.

The defense, lead by junior goalkeeper Jared Pickard and senior Dan Cole, played impeccably throughout the entire game, holding Medaille to a measly four goals. Pickard turned away 11 of Medaille’s shots while Cole continually thwarted Medaille’s attack.

Head Coach Kevin Waltz was exceedingly pleased with the Yeomen’s performance. In particular, Waltz rejoiced in the consistency of the intensity. In the past, the Yeomen have had difficulty maintaining a high level of intensity throughout the entire game; however, that problem was noticeably absent in this game. In addition, the Yeomen improved on “big picture play.”

Each player was keenly aware not only of his immediate positioning but of the potential of manifesting possibility. With chess-like vision, the Yeomen were able not to anticipate and dictate play several moves down the line. The Yeomen were masters, confident to the core.

The members of the team cited confidence as a leading ingredient in victory. The men’s team was on fire against Medaille and the joy of playing so near to their full potential shone through.

The Yeo-laxers were not as successful during Thursday’s battle against Division I opponent Bellarmine University, when the Knights defeated Oberlin 18-2. The Yeomen appeared timid in the first half, only taking two shots on the Knights’ cage. By the end of the half the score stood at 12-0.

The Yeomen fought back in the second half, only being outscored by the Division I team 6-2. Sophomore Bryan Harfenist found the back of the net with 1:21 remaining in the third quarter. Junior Will Jaffee’s goal later in the game was the only other offense generated by Oberlin. Jaffee also aided the Yeomen’s possession opportunities by grabbing a game-high seven groundballs.

Pickard was pelted with shots between the pipes but stepped up to the challenge, saving 15 shots to finish with an even .500 save percentage.
