SENATE REPORT

What’s Going On:

Student Senate is working on election reform, including formalizing procedures in their by-laws and constitution to deal with some of the issues that came up recently, such as tie situations and proper notice of both the opening and closing of the election.

In the coming weeks and months, Senate will be working hard to put student ideas at the front of the implementation of the strategic plan. If you have input on implementation or want to be involved, talk to a senator, or email senate@oberlin.edu

Last Sunday, Senate had a forum on the finances of Oberlin. Students were concerned about budgetary priorities and where the college’s invested money is going. President Nancy Dye voiced support for the reestablishment of a Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) committee, under the Investment Office. This committee, which will include students, will make social responsibility one of the factors affecting the proxy votes the college casts as a fairly large shareholder in various corporations.

What’s Coming up:

This Sunday at 2:00 p.m., in Wilder 115, there will be a forum with various faculty members and Provost Clayton Koppes on the arts and theater at Oberlin College.

Senate meetings, which are open to anyone, are every Sunday from 7-10 p.m., in Wilder 215

All Senators hold two office hours a week, which is a good time to talk with them one-on-one. You can find more information at http:///www.oberlin.edu/~senate.
