Swimming puts in another solid performance

The Oberlin College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams traveled to Cleveland State for an evening meet on Wednesday Nov. 16. It was a five-school meet, consisting of Oberlin, Baldwin-Wallace, Case Western Reserve, Cleveland State and Gannon.

The Yeomen’s best match was a loss against Baldwin-Wallace, with a final score of 154-74. They performed similarly against Case Western Reserve with a final score of 157-71. Cleveland State and Gannon also defeated the Yeomen, with final scores of 186-46 and 170-61, respectively.

Senior Thomas Limouze had solid performances in both the 1000-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle, placing fifth and third.

Reflecting on his improvement from last season, Limouze said, “I had a good meet at Cleveland State. I dropped two seconds in the 1000 free from 1035 to 1033 at Wittenberg. In the 500 I took out the first 100 faster than usual, which is a good change because I always have too much left at the end, and finished at a 503, as fast as I’ve gone in season ever. I died at the end of the 500, again which is good because it means I was working hard and it doesn’t usually happen; I made it hurt which is what I’m going to have to do if I want to go fast this weekend at Wooster.”

Limouze was also quick to congratulate teammate junior Zack Kaplan-Moss, who came in seventh in the 1000-yard freestyle and sixth in the 500-yard freestyle. “Zack Kaplan-Moss had an awesome meet at CSU as well. It is a really nice pool up there, and he stepped up and crushed the goal times that he had set for the meet in the 500 and 1000. The other guys and I thought he might not have been setting the highest goals, so he proved us right by blowing his goals out of the water,” commented Limouze.

Freshman Scott McInerney also had an impressive day, coming in tenth in the 200-yard IM and seventh in the 100-yard butterfly. He also swam a leg of the sixth-place 200-yard freestyle relay. Reflecting on the relay, he said, “I broke 22 seconds, 21.95 on a relay and Mark Muthersbaugh got a lifetime best, breaking two minutes in the 200 free.”

Looking forward to this weekend McInerney said, “I do have hopes of dropping significant time and possibly making the NCAA ‘B’ cut, which would make me ecstatic.”

The Yeowomen had a victorious evening against Case Western Reserve. They beat Case Western with a final score of 120-117. The Yeowomen fell to their other three competitors. The loss against Baldwin-Wallace was particularly close, with a final score of 122-110. The Yeowomen were defeated by Cleveland State 141-84 and by Gannon 129-103.

The Yeowomen’s 200-yard freestyle relay almost broke the school record. The relay team consisted of junior Emily Spence, first-year Ploy Keener, first year Bryne Ulmschneider and first-year Kir Selert. The team came in third.

Junior Kiri Ulmschneider, despite being sick, placed third in the 1000-yard freestyle, eighth in the 200-yard IM and tenth in the 100-yard butterfly. Her goal for the meet at Wooster is “to get down below where I have been this season, hopefully in the vicinity of my conference times from last year.”

In general, the entire team seemed happy with their performances at Cleveland State, but see room for improvement. They believe that this improvement will come at their meet this Thursday. After taking the past couple of weeks off to rest and recuperate, the Oberlin men’s and women’s squads will be leaving Thursday for the three day Wooster Invitational in Wooster, Ohio.
