Yeomen’s soccer defeats the Gators

Already with a big win over nationally-ranked Wooster, the Yeomen were frantic Tuesday afternoon as they beat Allegheny College 2-1. The Yeomen were challenged this game, and they stepped up big-time.

Last year the Yeomen beat Allegheny during the regular season, but the Gators still took the NCAC conference. In fact, Allegheny went three rounds deep into the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Early in the game, the Yeomen controlled the ball well but had trouble finding the goal. That changed with 5:13 left in the first half as sophomore Sam Zacheim scored off of an assist from sophomore Tim Kovanda, giving Oberlin a 1-0 lead.

The Yeomen took the lead for good when Zacheim scored again with 41:40 left in the second half, giving Oberlin their fifth win on the season. The Gators tried to come back when Alan Carr scored off a corner kick, with 4:54 left in the game. Goalkeeper Clayton Combe had three saves for the Yeomen.

“Good solid performance overall as a team,” said Head Coach Blake New. “Every game in conference is important and a challenge. We got to play with this same intensity every game.”

“It felt good to just have some hard work paid off,” said Zacheim. “This year we’re a lot more solid, and taking care of teams like Allegheny feels good.”

The victory moves the Yeomen to 5-5-2 on the season. They host Wittenburg College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
