- Section 1. The Oberlin College Student Union is an association of students registered for study on the Oberlin Campus.
- Section 2. The Student Union shall have its headquarters and center its activities on the Oberlin College Campus.
- Section 3. The governing body for this Union shall be known as the Oberlin College Student Union Board.
- Section 4. The Student Union Board shall operate in collaboration with the Associate Dean of Students/Director of the Student Union.
Section 1. The purpose of the Student Union Board is to ensure that the Union achieves it's mission as outlined below:
a. To serve as a gathering place for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests.
b. To create a sense of community within the college environment.
c. To provide opportunities that support the development of the whole student outside the classroom.
d. To provide programs and services that meet the social, cultural, educational, spiritual, and recreational needs of all members of the Oberlin College community.
e. To provide opportunities for students to develop leadership skills and abilities.
f. To provide opportunities for creativity and the free exchange of ideas and opinions.
Section 2. In fulfilling this role, the Student Union Board will have the power to:
a. Develop policies and procedures pertaining to the Student Union facilities, programs, and services.
b. Create and eliminate Student Union programs and services.
c. Determine the use of Student Union space including, but not limited to, the allocation of student organization offices.
d. Approve the Student Union budget proposal as presented by the Student Union Staff. The budget will then be submitted into the College budget process.
Section 3. To ensure that the Student Union is successfully meeting the needs and interests of all members of the Oberlin College community, the Union Board shall:
a. Continually assess the needs and interests of the college community.
b. Continually evaluate existing programs and services.
Section 4. In order to most successfully meet the social, cultural, spiritual, recreational, and educational needs of others, the Student Union Board shall develop and oversee a sub-committee known as the Student Union Program Council.
The Student Union Board shall consist of 12 voting and Student Union staff non-voting members. Membership must include the following:
Section 1. Student members (8)
a. Students must be full-time students currently enrolled at Oberlin College.
b. At least one student member must be from the Student Union student staff.
c. Every attempt will be made to ensure that at least one student member is from the Conservatory.
d. Students will be selected to serve a one year, renewable term, with a three year maximum.
e. All student seats will be selected by Student Senate. An interview committee comprised of four (4) Union Board members and three (3) student senators will interview and present recommendations to the Student Senate for approval.
f. All appointments will be made no later than March 15th.
g. Term of office will be July 1 - June 30.
h. Newly elected members will begin attending meetings (without vote) at the first Board meeting after appointment.
i. Students must be in good academic standing, although the Interview Committee may consider cases involving extenuating circumstances.
Section 2. Faculty Members (2)
a. Faculty members will serve a one year, renewable term.
b. Faculty members will appointed no later than March 15th.
c. Faculty members will be appointed by the General Faculty Council.
d. Term of office will be July 1 - June 30.
e. Newly appointed members will begin attending meetings (without vote) at the first Board meeting after their appointment.
Section 3. A&PS Members (2)
a. A&PS members will be selected to serve a one year, renewable term.
b. A&PS members may not be currently employed by the Student Union.
c. A&PS members will be appointed by the President.
d. A&PS members will be appointed no later than March 15th.
e. Term of office will be July 1 - June 30.
f. Newly appointed members will begin attending meetings (without vote) at the first Board meeting after appointment.
g. Director and Asst Directors of the Student Union are ex-officio members of the Union Board.
Section 4. Membership and participation shall be free from discrimination based on race, religion, ethnic group, national origin, sex, age, handicap, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
Section 1. Amendments to the Constitution shall be proposed by the Board whenever:
Either (A) The majority of the entire voting membership of the Board deems it necessary,
(B) A petition is presented to the Board signed by 10% of the student population.
Section 2. Amendments to the Constitution may be ratified in the following manner:
Either (A) By affirmation of at least eight (8) members of the Student Union Board and approval of the General Faculty,
(B) Student referendum (see by - laws) passed by 51% of the student body and approval of the General Faculty.
