The Pursuit of Research and Understanding How the Brain Works

David Shostak’20, a native of San Francisco, played four years on the varsity soccer team and graduated with a major in biology, a concentration in cognitive science, and a minor in environmental science. For the past two years, he has worked at a neurobiology lab at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. In fall 2022, Shostak will begin working toward a PhD in neuroscience at the University of California San Francisco. Read more about Shostak in this After Oberlin Q&A.

Emeritus Professor of Physics Dan Stinebring at the Forefront of Gravitational Wave Research

A senior member of the of the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves, Emeritus Professor of Physics Dan Stinebring studies how gravitational waves affect the universe and our Earth. Jakob Faber ’21 and Hengrui Zhu ’21 have been working alongside of Stinebring, which has provided them with opportunities to attend international conferences and listen to scientists from around the world.

Winter Term: Psychological Factors on COVID-19

Many areas of the country saw significant drops in pollution levels when stay-at-home orders were put in place several months ago. The effects on the atmosphere suggested to Devin Williams ’21 that there might be other factors to investigate. He joined a team of students who assisted Professor of Psychology and Environmental Studies Cindy Frantz in a project that would lead to the study of COVID-19 on psychological factors.
