Name: Joel Baetens, Professional Engineer

Job Title, Department and Location: Senior Manager of Energy and Resources for the Office of Environmental Sustainability, in the Service Building.

What does your job entail? I'm an energy engineer, so I work energy efficiency into engineering projects. Mostly this includes steering construction projects toward our carbon neutral commitment by utilizing energy efficient technology. An additional critical role is to maintain and expand the utility sub metering system. It provides data used in calculating efficiency investment paybacks. The metering system is also leveraged as a learning tool for community engagement in environmentalism. There's a lot of dailly problem solving, and the people are great.

How long have you been at Oberlin? I’m just rounding out my first year.

What are your hobbies or personal interests? Growing with my family, traveling (on hold), eating at new places (currently limited), and playing and listening to music, especially blues.

What is your favorite food? Kim’s Korean Grocery, The Arb (at Tappan), and Steel Magnolia.

Do you have a favorite quote? “You are on Native land”— a design slogan by Indigenous clothing company Urban Native Era
