Innovation and Impact: Past Projects

Research and Networking for Projects in Poetry

Project Description

My idea is to launch a poetry publishing press where the poems and authors published are chosen by randomly selected readers. With the Creativity Fund, I will be traveling to New York and San Francisco to conduct research, visit publishing houses, meet alumni and people of interest, expand my network, and test my ideas through an online format in order to best prepare to launch my venture.

About Ryan Magiera

I am a senior Classics major, president of O-Slam! - Oberlin’s first Slam Poetry Team, and former 3-year varsity starting basketball player for Oberlin. During my junior season, I incurred a career-ending injury and since then have been writing and performing poetry and generating a Slam Scene on campus by holding weekly drop-in poetry sessions (part open mic, part discussion, part workshop), holding monthly Slams, teaching an ExCo, bringing in internationally renown writer/performers (i.e. Buddy Wakefield, Anis Mojgani, Rachel McKibbens, etc.) and now starting a Slam team where will be competing in regional and national Slam poetry tournaments.
