Helen Newby began playing the cello at the age of seven and has since won recognition in a number of California’s regional competitions and programs. She recently received a Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance from the Oberlin Conservatory, and will be pursuing a Masters from the San Francisco Conservatory beginning this fall. In her time at Oberlin, she has premiered multiple student compositions and has been a member of the Contemporary Music Ensemble for the past two years. In the summer of 2012, she attended the Bang on a Can Summer Institute and the Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice at New England Conservatory. As a recipient of Oberlin’s Creativity and Leadership Fund, Helen’s quartet Chartreuse traveled to Norway in January 2013 to explore the country’s contemporary music scene.
