Chiara Graf is a PhD student in Classics at the University of Toronto, and the winner of the 2018 John J. Winkler Prize in Classics.

She will deliver her prize-winning essay in a public talk.

Drawing in part on Ngai’s concept of “stuplimity,” Graf argues that the evocative descriptions of natural disasters in Seneca’s Natural Questions perform philosophical work: “by overstimulating and consequently dulling the subject and by portraying a universe geared toward his destruction, Seneca’s style aims to diminish the inflated ego of the human subject.”
