Professor Mariana Hernández Burg will speak about the realities of militarization and mega development schemes facing indigenous communities in Mexico today. Professor Hernández will share insights on grass-root community struggles against these issues through their development of autonomy and defense of the land.

Bringing more than 20 years of experience in community organizing and education, Professor Hernández has taught bilingual language & cultural courses at the National Pedagogy University and Universidad Autónoma Metropolitan in Mexico City. She is currently the head professor for the Autonomous University of Social Movements (AUSM) in Chiapas.
