poster announcing Ramadan discussion

The annual observance of Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Ramadan is a religious holiday established in the 7th century when the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammed. Ramadan is a powerful symbol of unity, as it is a time when Muslims from all over the world come together.

Ramadan is observed during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, which is a lunar calendar based on the cycles of the moon.  In 2019, Ramadan begins the evening of Sunday, May 5, and ends the evening of Tuesday, June 4.  During this time, participants practice personal introspection, prayer, and fasting.

Our Arabic Fulbright Teaching Assistant Hawraa Sana will provide further insight into the meaning and traditions associated with this most sacred month of the year in Islamic culture.

Refreshments will be served.
