Associate Professor of Media Art (Department of Art) will give the President’s Lecture, “Upgrade Available.”
Proffessor Christensen will present her ongoing research and art project about “upgrade culture”––the perceived need of having to relentlessly upgrade our electronics and media to remain relevant. This body of artwork, which spans photography, video, and a range of digital media, investigates how upgrade culture impacts our personal lives, institutional operations, and long-term scientific research, especially space travel. Christensen will present about her current collaboration with scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory envisioning an artwork to be embedded on a spacecraft that will travel to Proxima b, an exo-planet 4.2 light years from Earth.
Julia Christensen has taught at Oberlin since 2007, when she became the Henry Luce Visiting Professor of the Emerging Arts, a joint appointment between the TIMARA Department (Oberlin Conservatory) and the Studio Art Department (Oberlin College). She joined the Department of Art faculty in 2011. Christensen’s artwork has been exhibited internationally; her work is currently on view at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) in Los Angeles. She has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, Creative Capital, LACMA Art + Tech Lab, MacDowell Colony, and the Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award. She is the author of Big Box Reuse (MIT Press), and Upgrade Available (forthcoming, Dancing Foxes Press).
This event if FREE and open to the entire campus community and the public.
