Uzawa in Noh Play. Courtesy Uzawa Hisa, Tessenkai.

Living National Treasure Hisa Uzawa and her daughter, Hikaru, lead this movement workshop as part of their Oberlin Noh residence.

Participants will learn forms (kata) of Noh dance, breathing, use of space, and interplay of Noh dance with chanting and instrumental music. Building on the basic elements of Noh movement, participants will learn a section of the play Lady Aoi dramatizing the entanglements of love, passion, and spirituality.

The Uzawas are Kanze Tessenkai Noh performers in Tokyo following traditions dating to the 14th century. Their artistry exemplifies noh and represents women within a male-dominated practice.
