The Gertrude B. Lemle Teaching Center and Oberlin’s Big Read project are hosting a faculty & staff book discussion of Yaa Gyasi’s “Homegoing” at noon on Wednesday, January 18, 2023.

The Big Read is a community-reading initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Oberlin’s selected Big Read book is “Homegoing,” which tells the story of half-sisters born in different villages in 18th-century Ghana. Spanning 300 years, it follows one branch of the family caught up in centuries of warfare against British colonists in Africa while the other was enslaved in the American South. The themes presented in the book relate closely to Oberlin’s historic role in the abolition movement and fight for freedom, and present-day activism for social justice and equality.

Registration for the workshop will open in early December 2022. Copies of the book will be available for faculty and staff to borrow and read before the discussion, and lunch will be provided.
